October 31st is Halloween
Halloween is one of the world’s oldest holidays, celebrated in several countries around the globe including the USA, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Mexico, Latin America, and Spain.
Origin 起源
In ancient times, western people thought the evil ghosts will return to earth on every October 31 night. In order to drove the evil ghosts away, they lightened the fire and made candlesticks old and the house really deserted, it appears no one was living there, thus the evil ghosts would not come into the house. They also deliberately dressed very untidy looking very ugly, so the evil ghosts didn't want to be close to them. Futhermore, they also knew the evil ghosts are afraid of noise, so they put on grotesque clothes to the streets. This is the origin of Halloween.
古代西方人认为,恶灵会在每年的10月31日晚上返回地球。为了驱赶恶灵,他们将火点着，将烛台做旧,将房子弄得很荒凉,似乎没有人住,这样恶灵就不会进去。他们还会刻意穿的很乱,看起来很丑,这样恶灵就不愿意接近他们。此外,他们也知道恶灵害怕噪声干扰,所以他们穿着古怪的衣服上街游行。这是万圣节的起源。

One story about Jack, an Irishman, who was not allowed into Heaven because he was stingy with his money. So he was sent to hell. But down there he played tricks on the Devil (Satan), so he was kicked out of Hell and made to walk the earth forever carrying a lantern
