China’s geography is extremely varied plex, including mountains, plateaus, plains, grasslands, basins, hills, islands, desert, glaciers, and frozen earth. Mountain areas cover about two-thirds of the total land area. There are more than 1,500 large rivers, the principal ones being the Yangzi river, the Huanghe, the Heilongjiang River and the Zhujiang River. China has 370 large lakes, of which the chief fresh-water lakes are Boyang, Hongze and Taihu. Lake Qinghai is the largest salt-water lake.

新中国成立以来,我国人口增长的历史过程大致可分为三个阶段。第一阶段从1949年到1964年,15年间人口有5亿增加到7亿,每增加1亿需7年半的时间。第二阶段从1964年到1974年,是人口的高速增长阶段,10年间人口由7亿增长到9亿,每增加1亿人所需的时间缩短到5年。第三阶段从1974年开始,在全国范围内实行计划生育,并把实行计划生育、控制人口数量、提高人口素质确定为一项基本国策。

At present, Suzhou University posed of three colleges and eight departments. The colleges are Finance and Economics, Law and Engineering; the departments are Chinese Language and Literature, Politics, History, Foreign Languages and Literature, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Physical Education, which teach twenty six specialties. The university has some 7,400 students including gradua
