《红字》讲述了在17世纪清教的殖民统治下，波士顿发生的一个恋爱悲剧： 本篇论文主要谈论《红字》中那些具有象征意义的人和事物，从而更加深刻的了 解作者所想要表达的隐含意义。本文主要从五部分来进行论述。第一部分介绍《红 字》这一本书，并找出本书中使用频繁的手法一一象征主义手法；第二部分论述 什么是象征主义，解释象征主义的意义，主要从象征主义的特点、代表人物进行 论述；第三部分对主要的人和事物中体现出来的象征主义含义进行分析论述，包 括玫瑰丛、字母A和其他的一些事物以及本文中的主人公们；第四部分从《红 字》所体现的隐含意义中反思当时的社会现实：人们对宗教的态度，人们对男性 和女性的态度；以及自然人与社会人之间的冲突，包括其利益的冲突，以及其自 身的自然属性和社会属性的冲突；最后一部分对本篇论文所论述的象征主义以及 其隐含的意义进行一个总的概括，并揭示出作者想要透过象征主义手法来表达的 意思。
