　　江南的古镇都离不开水，水是古镇的灵魂，给古镇增添了几份灵动和生机。枫泾镇为典型的江南水乡集镇，周围水网遍布，区内河道纵横，有“三步两座桥，一望十条港”之称，镇区多小圩，形似荷叶;境内林木荫翳，庐舍鳞次，水流急湍，遍植荷花，清雅秀美;故枫泾古镇又称“清风泾”、“枫溪”，别号为“芙蓉镇”。
　　小河纵横贯穿着枫泾古镇。清澈的河水潺潺流淌，据说此水由天目山而来通往黄浦江，清代后期因其交通便利，那时就已商业繁荣，舟船云集，在码头上堆货如山了。临水而建的一长排老屋，墙身直插河水，与水中的倒影连起来，形成了一幅对称的图景。随着水纹的洄流，水下的画面也在不断地漾动，似一幅摇曳多变的水彩图画。
　　形成半岸的廊棚，可蔽风遮雨，下雨不湿鞋，盛夏不撑伞。廊棚是从自家的屋檐往前延伸出来，用来乘凉和躲雨的。几十户人家的廊棚连成长长的一片，蔚为壮观。如今的廊棚除了供游人穿行，还在靠河的一侧放一张桌子，两条长凳，用于客人休息和饮食。廊棚的里侧都是饭店和专卖土特产的店铺。
