Preface
When I first mentioned to a colleague that I wanted to write a book on evolution,
he asked me why another one was necessary; were not there already plenty in
print? Indeed there were, many of them better than anything I could hope to write.
But most with which I was acquainted were not written for the audience I had in
mind. I wanted to write a book that someone with no more than a course in high
school biology could pick up and read. Among those, I hope, will be some who do
not accept the reality of evolution.
I do not presuppose that my writing is so clear and persuasive that anyone who
reads it will be magically convinced that evolution occurred. Rather, I would hope
that he or she would use this book as a
