社区是一个具有多功能的社会实体，是人们参与社会生活和政治生活的主要场所，是一个可持续发展的聚落的承载体，所以，构成社区的要素是多方面的,社区形成的主要因素有以下四个方面:
(1)．一定的地域
社区是地域性社会，社区具有一定的边界。脱离一定地域的社区是难以想象的，因此，地域要素是社区概念中的一个重要要素，它是社区存在和发展的前提，是决定社区变迁的重要条件 。 社区的地域要素为居民提供了生产和生活的空间及所需的自然资源和社会资源。社区的地域面积在一定程度上决定着居民的生产和生活状况；同时，社区的地域要素影响着社区的发展速度。它首先表现为地理位置对社区的影响。其次，地质、地形也严重影响着社区的发展，这是城市和社区发展的固体。

社区的人口是具有稳定的社会交往关系的一定数量的人群。人群因长期聚居在同一个地方而逐渐形成了多层次、成系统的内部交往关系。
社区人群是社区的主体，是社区构成的第一要素。由于人口本身具有 自然属性和社会属性两方面特征，社区人口构成也相应划分为自然构成和社会构成两大部分。
自然构成是指人口的性别构成和年龄构成。其中性别构成也称为性别比例，是指男女人口之间的数量比例关系。
社会构成是指社区内人口的民族构成、宗教信仰构成、文化构成、职业构成和阶层结构等。其中，职业构成是指社区内各职业人口的比例关系，标志着社区产业的构成状况、分工发达水平、经济发展水平和职业分化程度。
