1 How have the relationships that Americans have with their neighbours changed in recent years?
People used to feel they had to be actively nice to their neighbours and see them regularly, but now they try hard not to disturb their eighbours or take up their time.
2 In what way are Americans “pulled” as well as “pushed” to being isolated?
Americans are pulled (attracted) towards isolation by an image of themselves as self-reliant people able to stand on their own two feet, and pushed (forced) to it by lack of time to socialize.
