段落就是用一系列在逻辑和结构上有联系的句子来表述一个中心思想。段落的实质性问题就是必须把中心思想表述清楚,段落的长短取决于它在文章中的地位。一般说来,段落由三个部分组成(过渡性段落除外),即:
主题句、扩展句和结论句。

Components of a Paragraph
主题句的组成
主题句是表达段落主题的句子。它用以概括段落大意,或表明作者的观点态度,或指出作者的写作意图,反映了一段文章的中心思想,是段落的核心。段落中的其他各句都与它紧密相连并围绕它来展开。
主题句通常由主题(a topic)和作者的观点(an opinion or statement)两部分构成。主题是向读者表明这个段落讨论什么方面的,而主题思想则是表明作者对这个方面的看法。同一主题,由于看法不同,会有不同意思的主题句。
