Introduction
China’s banking sector has had another bumper year with stock prices, deposit
growth and IPO activity all reaching unprecedented levels. Indicative of the
overall gains, this year’s total market capitalisation of listed Mainland banks rose
to RMB trillion as at 26 November 2007, a significant pared to last
year’s RMB trillion. In addition to robust growth, the sector has undergone a
great deal of restructuring, particularly with respect to provincial, rural and policy
banks. This relentless change and ongoing improvement has made the banking
sector in China a key driver behind China’s economic boom.
While this transition has not been entirely painless, the level of professionalism
and transparency now being exhibited by many mainland Chinese banks is
comparable to that of their European or American counterparts. In this context,
KPMG in China and Hong Kong SAR is delighted to release its second annual
Mainland China Banking Survey.
The coverage in this year’s survey is considerably wider than in 2006. This year’s
survey covers 75 banks, compared to 22 in 2006, with a number of very notable
additions, including four of the 14 mercial banks and China’s three
